XQ Competencies
Rethinking the High School Experience
XQ Institute is dedicated to rethinking the high school experience so that every student graduates ready to succeed in life. The economy, workforce, and environment are changing rapidly, and high schools must respond. XQ’s tools and products empower educators, communities, and policymakers alike to disrupt outdated systems by redesigning schools and student learning to be more relevant and engaging.
The XQ Competencies framework is built around five main XQ Learner Outcomes, each serving as an umbrella to a set of more specific soft and hard skills. The outcomes cover themes from foundational knowledge to critical thinking and collaboration. These competencies provide a north star for students, prompting them to engage deeply in their own learning and to play a role in the skills they’re working to develop.
Description
High school changes everything for young people, but it hasn’t changed in over 100 years. Founded in 2015 by Laurene Powell Jobs and Russlynn Ali, XQ Institute is a leading non-profit organization dedicated to rethinking the high school experience and developing the tools and programs to make it a reality. XQ’s framework is based on a competency-based education system with tools, and resources that are flexible enough to be customized to the unique needs of every student in every school.
XQ partnered with GrandArmy to evolve and expand their design language into a cohesive system and apply it to the XQ Competencies and Vision Kit — the tools that help students and teachers understand XQ’s vision, create meaningful learning experiences, and add real value in the classroom. This design language allows anyone who interacts with the vision kit to progress from simply comprehending the competency-based system, to being fluent in all 37 competencies and able to create learning experiences themselves.
